Jamil A. Shibli

Prof. Shibli is Professor of Department of Periodontology, Director and Head of Oral Implantology program, at Guarulhos University, São Paulo Brazil. His research is focused, but not limited, on Oral Implantology and Periodontology Mainly Peri-implant diseases, Guided Bone Regeneration, Growth factors, implant surface topographies, stem cells, scaffolds and 3d printing, laser and RCT.

This presentation will focus on the management of Biological Complications that could adversely affect the clinical outcomes and success rate of dental implants.

Nowadays, the use of dental implants to restore partial and totally edentulous subjects is a successful treatment in dentistry and the prevalence of complications regarding dental implant is growing in the same proportion. Two major categories of complications occur: 1) biological complications associated with implant placement and healing of surrounding structures, and 2) technical complications associated with the prosthetic components of the implant or the prosthesis itself. The biological complication could also be divided into early (lack of osseointegration and infection) and late (bone loss, peri-implantitis, and implant failure). This presentation will focus on the Management of Biological Complications, including prevalence, severity, and strategies to treat and solve these complications that could adversely affect the clinical outcomes and success rate.

Learning objectives:

  • To define biological and technical complications in oral implantology
  • Risk factors for biological complication and its management
  • Treatment of biological complications
