Learning Objectives:
- How to identify burnout, in ourselves and others
- Why burnout is important when considering patient safety
- How to deepen our own resilience (the antidote to burnout) and some potential barriers to achieving this
- Some things you can implement tomorrow to reduce your likelihood of burning out, making you a safer and happier practitioner
Abstract:
Synopsis: Burnout is dangerous. It is dangerous because of the way that it makes us feel, and as it is linked with dentolegal risk it can be dangerous for our patients. This is because it impacts on the quality of care we provide, increases the likelihood of making a mistake, and because when we are not the best version of ourselves, our communication with our patients can be impaired. Increasing the resilience of clinicians, teams and organisations maximises the chances of optimum patient outcomes, reduces dentolegal risk and allows them to continue to practice safely and enjoy clinical practice, despite increasing demands.
