Since taking on the role of Editor-in-Chief for the International Dental Journal, Prof. Samaranayake has elevated the open-access journal to new heights. Under his leadership, the journal’s scope has been expanded to include emerging areas such as science and technology in dentistry, and artificial intelligence in dentistry. Additionally, new article types, including succinct rapid reviews, were introduced to keep pace with the evolving landscape of dental research. More recently, the editorial board has been strengthened with the addition of 70 members, including nine associate editors, bringing diverse expertise and perspectives.

These strategic changes have yielded impressive results, with the journal achieving an impact factor of 3.2 in 2023, propelling it into the top quartile of dentistry, oral surgery, and medicine journals. Furthermore, in 2024, manuscript submissions saw a remarkable 110% increase.
