Registration for 2010 FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Brazil opens this week

25.01.10 - Geneva, SWITZERLAND - Located on the northeast coast of Brazil, Salvador da Bahia is the country's third-largest city, boasting 34 km of beaches, a blend of Amerindian, African and European cultures, and an historical centre designated an official UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. As the country's first capital (from 1549 to 1763), Salvador has a long and rich history, evident in the distinctive architecture, cuisine and culture that continue to define the city, drawing visitors from around the world and making Salvador one of Brazil's top tourist destinations.

In addition to its role as one of Brazil's financial centres, Salvador is a city abuzz with cultural activities throughout the year, including the world's largest Carnival celebration, a summer music festival and regular events inspired by local food, theatre and dance traditions. The country’s multicultural milieu—set within a rapidly developing economic region—offers a distinctive stage for this year's FDI Annual World Dental Congress (AWDC), entitled "Local Challenges, Global Solutions".

FDI World Dental Federation and the 2010 Local Organising Committee of the Brazilian Dental Association have been collaborating closely to bring this world-class event to Salvador next September. AWDC is the only global dental event to feature business and policy meetings of leaders from more than 130 National Dental Associations in their quest to improve dentistry and oral health. This annual gathering offers participants the opportunity both to explore the latest technological and scientific developments at the World Dental Exhibition and Scientific Programme, and to follow current discussions about dental and oral health policy and promotion.

The educational content of the Scientific Programme for 2010 is structured to address the major themes affecting the profession today, presented by some of the world's leading clinicians. The topics are intended to introduce new trends in dental technology and patient care and to induce discussion on public policies and private practices, overviews of research, teaching and clinical practice, and debate about integrating dentistry and other health professions to achieve general and oral health.

Join the world’s leaders of the profession at the 2010 FDI Annual World Dental Congress for a week of thought-provoking discussion and cutting-edge technological displays in Brazil's "capital of happiness", Salvador da Bahia.

Brazilian dentistry represents a significant number of the world’s dentists: There are approximately 227,000 dental professionals in the country, including 43,000 specialists and 40,000 students. With 187 dental schools (as well as prosthetic technicians and auxiliary staff, such as dental hygienists and oral health assistants) and more than 500 local associations (of which 320 are related to the ABO), Brazil has the largest associative network of continuous education in dentistry on the planet.
